Computer Chips on Your Credit and Debit Cards

Posted 6.29.2015

If you use credit and debit cards, you might begin to see something different about them in the weeks and months ahead. The difference is in a small, square area on the card (about 1 cm each way) that contains an embedded computer chip. The new cards are called “smart cards,” and employ microchip technology. With chip technology, each transaction is approved using a unique encrypted authentication code, making if far more difficult for unauthorized users to copy or access your personal information. The technology goes by many names currently, such as: Smart Card, EMV Card, and Chip Card.

It is important to remember that “smart card” safety measures work only for in-person or card present transactions at properly equipped retail point of sale terminals and ATM machines.

Online retail transactions using your “smart card “do not offer the same safety and security because the technology only works if a machine can physically read the chip on your card.

As always, if you have any question regarding these upcoming changes, please contact the Bank at 740-984-2381 and ask for the Debit Card department.

Telephone Scam Alert

We have become aware that there are fraudulent telephone calls or text messages circulating that indicate access to your debit card has been “temporarily prevented, or “blocked” and that you need to enter your card number to activate the card.

The Citizens Bank Company will never send or call you with this type of message. If you receive a text or telephone call of this nature, do not provide any personal information in response. If you have responded to a text or call of this type, please contact the Bank at 740-984-2381 and ask for the Debit Card department. As a reminder, you will never be asked by our Bank to provide any personal or unique identifying information through an attachment in an email, text or phone call.
